View ArtistThis Heart is a montage that celebrates the genius of black innovation and history. The only hospital structure now standing in Kansas City that was built for and managed by the African American community from 1902 until 1972 is Wheatley-Provident Hospital. One of the first hospitals in the country exclusively staffed by African American physicians, nurses, and administrators, it is situated at 1826 Forest. It was also the nation’s first model children’s ward and one of the few hospitals in the early 1900s to train African American physicians and nurses.
