Behind The Redline
A Black man and woman face away beneath a sunset, with a golden key between them. A cutout reveals neighborhood homes, symbolizing Black labor without ownership. Bricks and bold patterns reflect struggle, strength, and cultural legacy.

Artist Spotlight

Mariah Katherine
I am a Kansas City-based visual artist and UMKC alumna with a passion for storytelling through paint, design, and community-centered work. My artistic focus draws from real life—similar to the storytelling style of Spike Lee—blending culture, identity, and memory through vibrant visuals. I’ve supported small businesses with illustrations and branding for over 15 years, taught fluid and pop art classes for a decade, and gained experience in graphic design through my senior internship with UMKC’s Arts and Sciences newsletter, a car wrap company, and more. After being impacted by the RIF at the IRS, I’ve relied solely on my art to support myself and my son—continuing a legacy of creativity and resilience.
